Jeffrey Schlupp screamer earns Crystal Palace a late point at Fulham

Oliver Glasner lauded Jeffrey Schlupp’s “amazing” late equaliser which earned Crystal Palace a point from a 1-1 Premier League draw with Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Schlupp came off the bench to score a goal-of-the-season contender that cancelled out Rodrigo Muniz’s ninth league goal of the season. The former Ghana international received the ball from Adam Wharton before he produced a powerful strike into the top-left corner in the 87th minute, as Palace claimed a point to follow up Wednesday’s 2-0 win over Newcastle at Selhurst Park.

Glasner said: “The finish is amazing. All of the substitutes brought a great energy at the end of a very tough week and we had an amazing goal from Jeffrey, so I’m pleased with the performance.

“We started from the right with Adam Wharton, who played a pass to Jeffrey and with his second touch, he had a great finish. He was a little bit angry because yesterday we had a finishing exercise with old players against young players and the old players lost, so I think that’s why he wanted to score.”

Palace continued their momentum from that midweek victory over Newcastle through Michael Olise, who had a chance to reward their early efforts. Wharton slipped the tricky winger through one-on-one but he failed to hit the target when his right-foot shot was scuffed wide.

Palace were without the injured Eberechi Eze but Olise did not seem out of place without his attacking partner when he almost assisted the breakthrough. Olise used his trusted left foot to whip a wide free-kick on to the head of Chris Richards but the United States defender jumped too early and his close-range header was powered over the bar as Fulham avoided another early scare.

The home side had not been at the races and Marco Silva’s animated reactions on the touchline best described their poor first half. But they finally started to get going and they put together a dangerous passage of play on the stroke of half‑time.

João Palhinha lifted the ball over the top of the Palace defence into the path of the surging Muniz, who held off his markers before Dean Henderson saved the forward’s poked shot from inside the six‑yard box.

Fulham’s positive end to the first half continued early into the second where they soon grabbed the opener. Timothy Castagne’s run blindsided the napping Tyrick Mitchell in behind the right-hand channel before his well-weighted cross was nodded in by the unmarked Muniz at the back post.

Glasner turned to the bench, replacing the in-form Jean-Philippe Mateta with Odsonne Édouard, who almost equalised with his first touch. The target man performed a neat spin on the edge of the area but he was let down by his shot selection when his side‑footed effort fell kindly to Bernd Leno.

Palace deserved a goal and they got just that through a moment of magic from Schlupp. The former Ghana international received a pass by Wharton before his first touch teed up a thunderous strike which rocketed into the top left-hand corner to level the score at 1-1.

Silva rued his side’s first‑half performance, saying it was not good enough and that the draw was a fair result. The Fulham manager said: “We are not happy with the result but it was a fair result in my opinion.

“Overall our first half was not at the level which we normally play at home and it’s clear this afternoon that we saw two completely different halves.

“We were not calm enough to build the attacks and off the ball we were not aggressive.”
