2000 Guineas 2024 tips, odds and preview at Newmarket

Newmarket hosts the 2000 Guineas Stakes on Saturday as the first British Champions Series of the flat season.

City Of Troy is the odds-on favourite ahead of 13 rivals, comprised of only colts that are three-years-old, with a long list of incredible previous winners.

The Aidan O'Brien trained horse represents one of four potential entries with three outsiders in contention before the final round of declarations set to be made on Thursday morning.

River Tiber is a massive price in the antepost market as he's got the potential of not running at all as he's only been seen over sprints between 5f-6f.

The 2000 Guineas is a historic race that goes back to its first recorded contest back in 1809.

2000 Guineas winners by year

  • 2023: Chaldean
  • 2022: Coroebus
  • 2021: Poetic Flare
  • 2020: Kameko
  • 2019: Magna Grecia
  • 2018: Saxon Warrior
  • 2017: Churchill
  • 2016: Galileo Gold
  • 2015: Gleneagles
  • 2014: Night Of Thunder

Quite often in the 2000 Guineas, it's not about who wins but who places in behind.

In recent years those who've placed behind have gone on to go well, if not better.

Coroebus won in 2022 and has only been seen three times since, winning the St James's Palace Stakes by a head at Royal Ascot.

But failed to win on two subsequent appearances as the favourite.

And that's another aspect that's prevalent in the Guineas, is the boys in blue (Godolphin) being prominent.

2023 was the first running in which a Godolphin horse hadn't placed in the top three since 2019.

With Pinatubo third in 2020, Master Of The Seas second in 2021 and Coroebus and Native Trail first and second in 2022.

Mostly trained by Charlie Appleby, ridden by William Buick or James Doyle, a Godolphin-owned horse has placed in the top three in eight of the last 11 renewals.

Yet there's only one entry this year from the Royal Blue colours, in the form of the unbeaten Notable Speech.

But it could be another big victory in Britain for Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien with the clear favourite, having not won this race since 2019.

The Irish trainer has won this race ten times since 1998 with the likes of Rock Of Gibraltar, George Washington, Camelot and Churchill.

Of course Frankel won this race back in 2011, two years after Sea The Stars, who both represent among the best progeny in racing, which is another reason this race is for the future of the sport.

2000 Guineas Tips

Haatem

It seems worth backing this race with a couple of each-way punts on the off chance the big favourite doesn't turn up or at the very least to get a big payout for placing.

Haatem had a busy season as a two-year-old with nine races winning twice but often showing a lot of potential in defeat.

It was partly why it was still quite a shock to see him win so comfortably in the Craven Stakes at Newmarket just a couple of weeks ago.

Reversing the form from the Dewhurst Stakes back in October with Eben Shaddad.

That horse finished well ahead in October but over three lengths away from Haatem on his first start over 1m, and winning in such a way over course and distance on seasonal debut suggests he's worth following in at such a big price.

He did finish nearly nine lengths away from the odds-on favourite but that turnaround in form makes him go close if he's still got room for further improvement.
