Emma Hayes' side led through a ninth-minute header from Aggie Beever-Jones - in the team for the injured Lauren James - before Liverpool turned things around via efforts from Sophie Roman Haug in the 51st minute and Gemma Bonner midway through the second half.

A chaotic finale then saw Beever-Jones net her second with ten minutes of normal time to go before substitute Leanne Kiernan restored the hosts' advantage a minute later.

Teagan Micah's own goal brought things level once again two minutes later but Bonner headed in the winner in stoppage time.

Manager Emma Hayes' reaction summed it up, as she put her head in her hands when the winner went in.

With three matches left to play, the west London outfit - WSL champions for each of the last four years - are six points behind City, who have two games remaining.

As recently as March, Chelsea were aiming for a quadruple, but now face the very real prospect of ending trophyless.

It will be the first time Hayes has had a trophyless season since the 2018/19 campaign.

The Chelsea players looked devastated at the final whistle, knowing the may have just blown their chance at the title.

It has been a tough week for Chelsea having lost the Champions League semi-final to Barcelona last weekend.

When asked if this week has been one of her toughest, Hayes told talkSPORT: “No, I don’t think so. It just comes with the territory. You have to accept losing games.

“I’m not downbeat about it. I wanted to keep pushing to the end, but it’s not to be.

“The title will go to City and you can’t concede three set piece goals, and four goals in one half, and expect to win the title.

“Yes we have a mathematical chance of winning it, but I think it’s over.”

On the performance, she added: “There’s a lot of fatigue and tiredness in the group. I thought we were sloppy, but it’s a hard football match when you come here. It’s a real first and second ball game.

“They played well Liverpool, fair play.”

It was a season that has promised so much in Hayes' final season before she joins the US Women's team.

“I’m proud of the team’s effort over the year," Hayes continued. "I don’t want to be too harsh on them, the realities are we have fallen short.
